My Mum got these agate pieces years ago, from a seaside holiday we had at Charmouth. They are so beautiful!
When my Mum asked me if I wanted to make something with them, I couldn’t get started quick enough. I wanted to make something she could hang in the window, they look so beautiful when the sun shines through.
You could hang them individually as ornaments in your home, or even a decorative pieces for the garden!
To prepare your agate for hanging you will need:
- Silver wire
- Aluminum tape
- Scissors (I used decorative scissors – but this is optional)
- Wire cutters
- Ribbon/String (something to hang them with)
Step 1: Measuring the wire
You need to measure how much wire you will need for each piece of agate, I did this by loosely looping the wire around the agate and leaving around 2 inches spare. Cut the wire with the wire cutters.
Step 2: Attaching the wire to the agate
Using the aluminium tape you need to stick the wire to the agate, this is done along the edge of the agate.
First cut a small rectangle of aluminium tape, this should be around the same size of the edge of the agate. Using this piece stick the wire to the edge of the agate at the bottom, this will hold the wire in place whilst you do the rest.
Then you need to tape the rest of the wire along the edge of the agate, I did this in two halves – so just cut two longer pieces or tape which went from the tape already there to the top.
You need to make sure you press hard on the tape, moulding it to the shape of the agate.
Step 3: Making the loop
This is a bit that is the most fiddly, using one piece of the excess wire – loop this into a semi-circle (you can do this around a pen if it’s easier), the other piece of wire then needs to over lap the first piece and taken through the loop. Shape the wire to the shape of the agate.
You should now have one agate piece ready to hang, this could be with ribbon or string.
Mum’s wall hanging is now hanging beautifully in her kitchen window!
I would love to see what you do with your agate, let me know with the hash tag #eighteencreations
